You may have noticed, unless you live in a cave, this recent social media craze. Everyone and their grandmother are jumping on the social networking bandwagon, but why? All of a sudden, corporations, advertisers, public relations professionals etc. have decided that social networking sites and social media is the new, brilliant way to reach their audiences. But, is it? Well, here is my two cents… Recently, Facebook, Myspace, Twiiter, Blogs have become huge. Corporations use these platforms to establish and maintain relationships with audiences, and through that, audiences gain this sense of value and connection with those corporations. Now, people can voice their opinion and have an effect. However, where many corporations have gone wrong in this social media craze is jumping on the bandwagon without reason or knowledge of how to effectively utilize social networking sites. This annoys me….. immensely.. For example, when I was working as an assistant to a real estate agent, this agent was registered on Twitter and Facebook, and had no reason or idea why, but she was…What bothers me about this is that she is one of those many whom have jumped on the bandwagon with no clue how to be an effective social media communicator, but because she is physically ON Twitter and HAS a Facebook page, she thinks she is all tech savvy and up-to-date with today’s way of communicating, but, let me tell you, she is FAR from it. What is even more hilarious, she is still stuck in the world of traditional advertising and forms of communicating and will not budge..but hey, it’s all good, because she’s on Twitter… ha
I could keep going, but I think you get my point. Overall, if you are in any business, and you decide to venture over to the wild side and join the social media craze, make sure you have reason, you utilize it, you position yourself and use social media to either improve your existing brand or to create a strong brand that has a consistent message….
more to come…
